Integrated Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV and Support for Infant Feeding: Health Providers Course

Audience: Clinic-based health personnel and supervisors

Purpose: To provide participants with a basic understanding of HIV and AIDS facts and prevention, mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) mechanisms, current MTCT risk reduction interventions, and infant feeding in the context of HIV and AIDS.

Methodology: Demonstrations, clinical practice, field visits, working groups, case studies, group discussion, role plays, checklists, and lectures. Videos and slides are used during the training to reinforce information and practice. Participants benefit from clinical practice, working directly with breastfeeding and pregnant women. The course includes opportunities for participants to talk with people living with HIV and AIDS, community service providers, and volunteers.

Structure: The 12-day infant feeding and HIV and AIDS course is divided into 37 sessions. Each session includes the following components: duration, introduction, learning objectives, content and training methods, and materials and recommended readings.

Materials and tools: An instructional plan details the outline of the course sessions, and a module (265 pages) contains the course content.
