Formative Research: Skills and Practice for Infant and Young Child Feeding and Maternal Nutrition

Audience: Program staff

Purpose: Prepare participants to conduct formative research (trials of improved practices (TIPS), in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions) using effective communication skills in order to collect information to plan and improve programs.

Methodology: Participants learn formative research methods and effective, relevant interpersonal communication skills, through lecture, participatory exercises and experiential learning activities in the field. Methods include role-plays, small group work, peer observations, discussions, and community visits.

Structure: The module is divided into 30 individual learning sessions. Each learning session describes specific performance-based learning objectives, time required, materials needed, background content, and process.

Materials and tools: Participant materials include learning session exercises, pre- and post-test tools with answer sheets, examples of food lists for infants of different age groups, and skills checklists. Trainer materials include instructions for learning activities, transparencies, examples of negotiation to guide the trainer, and a training evaluation.
