Using the Essential Nutrition Actions to Improve the Nutrition of Infants, Young Children and Women: A Four Day Training Course for Program Managers and Pre-service Instructors

Audience: Program Managers and Pre-service Instructors

Purpose: To prepare program managers and pre-service instructors to train service providers in an action-oriented approach to improve the nutrition of infants, young children and women. Focus is placed on the operational strategy to promote seven proven nutrition actions (breastfeeding, complementary feeding, feeding of the sick child, women’s nutrition, control of anemia, control of vitamin A deficiency, and control of iodine deficiency disorders) at six key life cycle contact points utilizing facility based and community based structures in the health sector, as well as non-health sector contact points.

Technical Skills
  • 7 essential nutrition areas of action for maternal and young child health in Africa and Asia
  • Life cycle approach to expand coverage of nutrition support at 6 key contact points (pregnancy, delivery, postnatal & family planning, immunization, well child & GM/P, and sick child) in the health sector at the facility and community level, as well as in other sectors
  • Causes and consequences of malnutrition
  • Elements of a behavior change communication strategy to improve nutrition through ENA
  • Basic elements of monitoring and evaluation for ENA
  • Critically assess causes of malnutrition using the Conceptual Framework approach, and identify strengths and gaps in existing approaches being undertaken
  • Plan the process of integrating the 7 Essential Nutrition Actions into policies and at key contact points using ongoing interventions in the health sector (both in facilities and communities), non-health sector, and through communication channels

Methodology: Presentation of content by facilitator using PowerPoint slides, hand-outs, role-plays, discussion, VIPP (Visualization In Participatory Programs), small group work (including discussion panels and short debates), and videos.

Structure: The module is structured around key themes covering nutrition problems and consequences, essential actions for maternal and child nutrition in Africa (technical content and operational aspects), guiding principals in infant and young child feeding, women’s nutrition, control of anemia, control of vitamin A deficiency, control of iodine deficiency disorder, behavior change strategies for ENA, as well as monitoring and evaluation. (In Ethiopia, consideration is given to HIV/AIDS and infant feeding; nutrition support and the care of HIV + women; the role of ENA in times of emergencies.)
