Lactational Amenorrhea Method Learning Session

Audience: Designed for use by field agents who work with credit for women programs to teach community women about LAM. Field agents have little or no family planning training.This session can be used by community-based workers for women's groups that meet periodically.
Purpose: To help participants learn about LAM for child spacing and facilitate women's groups to improve breastfeeding and LAM use.
Content:

Technical

· Review of family planning methods effectiveness chart (very effective, effective, less effective and not effective)
· Three criteria for using the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM)
· Difference between breastfeeding and LAM
· Who can rely on LAM? (four case studies)
· Benefits of LAM to mother and family

Skills

· Identify LAM criteria through case studies
· Use flash cards
· Use adult learning principles
· Facilitate groups

Methodology: Participants learn about using LAM for child spacing and adult learning principles through participatory and experiential learning activities.
Structure: The 30-minute LAM session is structured around information and skills needed for participants to facilitate this theme with women's groups.
Materials: Cards with a family planning method written on each; illustrations of the 3 LAM criteria; and 4 case studies for identifying LAM users.
